  1. LASERWRITER 8.0 PRINTER DRIVER — WHAT’S NEW

  3. The LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver offers improved PostScript™ printing, advanced paper-handling capabilities, customizable printer resources that support your printer’s specific features and options, full support of PostScript Level 1 and Level 2, and enhanced Printing and Page Setup options.

  5. For more information about these and other features of the LaserWriter 8.0 driver, see the “LaserWriter 8.0 Update Guide.”

  10. BEFORE INSTALLING THE DRIVER SOFTWARE
  11.  
  12. When you install the LaserWriter 8.0 software, the installation process replaces some portions of the previous LaserWriter software. If you intend at times to use an older version of the LaserWriter driver, you should be aware of the following:

  14. •  Installation leaves the older version of the LaserWriter driver on your system in case any of your applications require it for printing. If none of your applications require the old driver, you can delete it from your System Folder by dragging its icon (located in the Extensions folder if you have System 7) into the trash.
  15.  
  16. •  Installation places new versions of the PrintMonitor and Backgrounder on your system. If you have System 6 and intend to use an older version of the driver later, make backup copies of your old PrintMonitor and Backgrounder before installing the new driver and keep them for later use.

  18. •  Files on your LaserWriter 8.0 Install disk whose names end with “.cmp” have been compressed to allow them to fit on the disk. You must use the installer to expand and place them in your System Folder. Other files, such as the PPD files, are not compressed and can be copied by dragging them from the installation disk into your System Folder.

  21. ABOUT THE LASERWRITER UTILITY

  23. The LaserWriter 8.0 driver requires the LaserWriter Utility application program version 7.4.1 or later. The LaserWriter Utility is not automatically installed by the Installer program. It is located on the LaserWriter 8.0 Install disk in the Printing Tools folder. To install the utility, drag its icon from the installation disk onto your hard disk.

  26. ABOUT PPD FILES

  28. The LaserWriter 8.0 driver uses a PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file to specify the printing characteristics of your LaserWriter. You can use the Easy Install option of the Installer program to automatically install PPD files for all standard LaserWriter printers; or you can use the Custom Install option to manually select and install only those PPD files you need.

To take full advantage of your printer’s features, use the Chooser to select your LaserWriter printer. Click the Setup button in the Chooser to set up the driver to use the PPD file that is appropriate for your printer model. The Setup dialog box contains an Auto-Setup button that automatically selects an appropriate PPD file for your printer model. If no PPD file is available for your printer, you can select a generic printer PPD file that provides the basic functions of any LaserWriter printer.

PPD files are listed by model name for printers that have standard PostScript versions and memory capacity. Additional PPD files are provided for printer models that have a specific version of PostScript and, in some cases, a specific amount of memory (RAM). For example, the PPD file named “LaserWriter IIg v2010.113 8MB” is the correct PPD file for a LaserWriter IIg with PostScript version v2010.113 and 8 megabytes of memory. If such PPD files are available, it is recommended that you install and use the PPD file created for your printer’s specific model, PostScript version, and memory capacity.

  37. ABOUT CREATING EPS FILES
  38.  
  39. When creating an Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) file with the driver’s “Save” option, you should note the following:
  40.  
  41. •  Creating EPS files with the All option selected in the Font Inclusion pop-up menu in the EPS dialog box can create very large files. If you include all fonts in an EPS file and save the file with the Unlimited Downloadable Fonts option selected, an extremely large file may be created.
  42. •  If you create an EPS file with no fonts included and open the document, fonts in the document appear on your screen, but Courier may be substituted when you print.
  43. •  When creating EPS files with preview information included, applications that create their own PostScript code may not display the EPS file accurately on the screen.

  46. USING THE 8.0 DRIVER
  47.  
  48. When using the LaserWriter 8.0 driver, you should be aware of the following special cases:
  49.  
  50. All LaserWriters
  51.  
  52. •  The LaserWriter 8.0 driver allows some printers to print using a larger imageable print area on the page. If your printer does so, you may find that text in some documents reflows or is clipped to fit the new imageable area.
  53.  
  54. •  If you print using A4 size paper, have chosen Manual Feed as the Paper Source, and have a B5 size paper tray installed in your printer, the page will be clipped to match the B5 paper size.
  55.  
  56. •  If you select 2-Up or 4-Up printing and require a Cover Page, you should choose the After Document option for the Cover Page.
  57.  
  58. •  Printing multiple documents with the Finder may not work if the documents have been created by different applications.

  61. LaserWriter IIg and IIf
  62.  
  63. •  When selecting paper sources from the First From and Remaining From pop-up menus in the Print dialog box, selecting Manual Feed for either source sets the driver to print the first page from the manual feed tray.

  65. •  Some form-printing applications cannot print forms using the Layout settings in the Page Setup dialog box.

  67. LaserWriter IINT and IINTX
  68.  
  69. •  If you select both the Smooth Graphics and the Invert Image options in the Page Setup Options dialog box, a PostScript error results.
  70.  
  71. •  Do not use the B5 tray to print envelopes on a IINT, use the Letter tray instead.

  73. LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630
  74.  
  75. •  You cannot use Auto Select as the Paper Source in the Print Dialog box to print envelopes from the optional envelope feeder.
  76.  
  77. •  When you are printing in the background, no error alert appears when the printer runs out of paper.

  79. •  When you are printing at 600 dots per inch (dpi), bitmapped images may appear with lines across the image.

  86. USING THE LASERWRITER 8.0 DRIVER WITH THE KANJI SYSTEM

  88. To print Japanese characters using KanjiTalk or the Japanese Language Kit, your system must have WorldScript II 7.1.1.

  91. USING THE LASERWRITER 8.0 DRIVER WITH APPLICATION PROGRAMS
  92.  
  93. Some application programs do not yet take advantage of the new features of the LaserWriter 8.0 driver, or have small incompatibilities that result in printing problems. If you experience problems with an application program, contact the publisher of the program. In some cases a newer version of the application may be available.

  95. The following list describes some special cases that you should be aware of when working with specific application programs. (There may be other application problems not mentioned in this Read Me.)

  97. Aldus Freehand 3.1
  98. •  You cannot print using Layout options in the Print dialog box. If you choose a layout from the Layout Pop-up menu, the document does not print and no error message appears.
  99. •  EPS files created from within Freehand with the LaserWriter 8.0 driver’s “Save” option cannot be used in other applications.
  100. •  Selecting the Unlimited Downloadable Fonts option in the Page Setup Options dialog box results in a PostScript error.

  102. Aldus PageMaker 4.2a
  103. •  You cannot scale EPS images in documents printed using the Layout option in the Page Setup dialog box.

  106. •  Using several font style combinations in text can result in spacing problems.
  107. •  When working with large EPS files in a document, you may need to increase the amount of memory allocated to the application.

  110. •  When printing documents that contain gradient fill patterns, the document is printed with solid patterns instead of gradients.

  113. •  When you print documents that contain rotated or filled polygons, a PostScript error results.

  116. •  Printing documents using the Calibrated Color/Grayscale option in the Print pop-up menu of the Print Options dialog box results in a PostScript error.

  120. •  Be sure that enough space is available on your hard disk when printing large documents, otherwise the application may malfunction.

  135. •  In PowerPoint version 2.01f, you cannot import an EPS file created with the LaserWriter 8.0 driver that has been saved without preview information.
  136. •  Increase the memory allocated to the application in order to import EPS files.

  139. •  Printing documents that have rotated objects with rounded corners results in a PostScript error.

  145. •  You cannot print EPS files created by the LaserWriter 8.0 driver that contain certain TrueType fonts.

  151. •  When creating an EPS file with these programs and the LaserWriter 8.0 driver, you must select the QuickDraw Printer option.

  154. SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT APPLICATION INCOMPATIBILITIES
  155.  
  156. •  When printing with some applications, the Printer Status boxes may appear overlapping or misaligned on the screen, preventing you from canceling printing by clicking the Cancel button. Press Command-Period to cancel printing.
  157. •  If you see unexpected format results when you print a document, choose Page Setup and check whether the paper size is shown as Other. If so, select the correct paper size.
  158. •  Utility programs that attempt to change your current printer without using the Chooser may produce unexpected results.
